This year’s Cinco de Mayo parade won’t include traditional post-parade cultural festivities at Clark Park after city officials expressed concerns.
Officials with the Mexican Patriotic Committee that stages the events said the changes, which include a shorter parade route, are the biggest in more than 20 years of organizing the festivities and follow unrelated violence during last year’s parade.
The post-parade festivities are a long-held tradition in southwest Detroit featuring music, dancing, food and children’s activities. Not having it this year is disappointing to parade attendees such as Ramiro Perez, who said the tradition should continue.
