Snapshot: McMillan Elementary School

Mc Millan stands bruised and battered on West End street in the Delray neighborhood.

After a fire in January 2008 (and again since) Mc Millan stands bruised and battered on West End street in the Delray neighborhood.  Since closing in 1999 the school has sat unused.  It has been a canvas for graffiti and a playground for vandalism and theft in the most recent years.

I attended McMillan when I was a kid but only for two years, Then went to Cary school which is also gone. I loved both schools. I feel so bad to see the school end up like this. I’ve looked at pictures of the inside. And can remember walking down those hallways myself. looking around the corner from my first grade class with my teacher Mrs. McCann. Back then I think the principle was Mr. Roundtree.

I went to Kindergarden at McMillan in 1991. My sister went there until the 6th grade, and our family moved to Dallas. I remember too well my days there, my teacher Mr. Bend, and the toys we had. I remember a conversation with him, and even how he had misspelt my name on the first day of school. I remember walking down the steps and waiting for my sister and my mom. I remember my first day and how I kept running back after my mom.

I graduated college this past December and I flew to Detroit to see my family and my old places. When I got to McMillan, my heart broke. It’s now a field of grass. I couldn’t believe it was all gone, a part of my childhood I will never get to relive. It’s so awful what has happened to Detroit. And now my family’s high school, Logan, will suffer the same fate I’m afraid.

I went to McMillan in the years of 67 till June of 69. It was a Junior High School then. I lived near Ft. Wayne, on Calvery street. Long walk to school. All of Delary was “stuffed-tight with house’s then. I remember a lot of kid’s and wonder where they are now (I look for some of them every Once-in-awhile). I had gone to Cary and Gillies elemtary school. I started playing the trumpet there. Music teacher (for Band) was Ms. McMasters for one year. And Mr. Gedian my last year there. After McMillan I would have went to Southwestern but I went to Cass Tech. High School.

    Hi,

I attended Cary elementary and McMillian Jr. High School. However, I only attended McMillian for a year. I still have fun memories of my days in Delray. I am looking for anyone who attended Cary during the 1955 thru. 1961. I also graduated from Southwestern High in June of 1967.

I went to McMillan when it was a Jr High school. I was there in 1970. Before that I went to Morley Elementary. Hardly no one remembers Morley.
I lived in Delray for about 10 years growing up.

I started attending McMillan in 1951. I went from kindergarten through eighth grade. It made me sad to hear the school was torn down. I have a lot of good childhood memories- growing up in Delray was a great cultural experience.
