In The Media

A collection of southwest Detroit related media – articles, photography, video, audio – from around the web.

MetroTimes – The century-old house is Peters’ folk art canvas. “I just figured I’m gonna do something, make it look nice around here,” he says. “Just something you get in your head and you do it. Just like an artist does…”

Detroit Cinco de Mayo Parade

Lowrider Magazine – This event was attended by a diverse crowd as young and old, urban and suburban, black, white, brown, and everything in between enjoyed the sights and the sun from the sidelines.

Affordable Spaces For Artists

MetroTimes – The corner of Hubbard and Porter streets hums with activity… though some houses down the street seem askew or overgrown, this building is the grandest…

Day of the Dead

Real Detroit Weekly – All you can see from the street is the smoke of rising incense and candles, a few picture frames and what looks like a psychedelic skeleton. Welcome to Dia de Muertos.

Expressions Raises Southwest

Real Detroit Weekly – Two things struck me about these photos: First, they showed that there was still a strong, possibly thriving, lowrider community in this city. What was going on here?

Retired With Grace

MetroTimes – Just before Devil’s Night 1995, television news crews went sniffing around southwest Detroit. Knowing the neighborhood was notorious for its Devil’s Night violence and destruction
